Clemson Blast from the Past
Went through my old MySpace blog posts and found some I liked. I will be sharing them periodically. Here’s one from when we lived in Delaware. Everybody was always telling me to give Bowden time. Well, it seems like my feelings for him were always justified. Tomorrow, I will take time to pile on him again with my Clemson 09 report.

Clemson
Maybe it was me. I don’t know. For some reason over the last 8 years Tommy Bowden could not get the Tigers over the hump. No 10 win season, no ACC championships, no BCS bowl appearances. Now that I’ve moved away, Tommy has the boys in a one game playoff for a bid in the ACC championship game. Tomorrow they will play Boston College and a win gets them the nod. If they lose, they can still win the division if BC loses the next week. However, it would be better for Bowden and everyone if they just took care of business themselves. Otherwise, it’s another week of “Tommy can’t win the big one.” Now, there has been no more vocal critic of Bowden than me. I think everyone who knows me knows how I feel about his coaching skills(or lack thereof), but I won’t rehash that or my disdain for Superman Returns. I will say this. If the man gets the job done and wins the last 3 to stand at 11-2 with an ACC championship then I will be the first to praise him. Frankly, in the 8 wins they have looked like we’ve been hoping for since Bowden arrived. They now run different formations AND different plays. Cullen Harper has been so good that QB-n-waiting-since-his-11th-grade-year Wily Korn will probably redshirt. 7 months ago this would have been unthinkable. I don’t know if it’s the absence of my negativity in the Clemson area, a weak ACC and non-conference schedule, or everything finally coming together, but this year has been different. It makes you wonder what we’d be talking about if we had shown up against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. I firmly believe we’re better than both those teams and 2 wins there would have us atop the BCS standings. Instead, we’ve got Saturday. I would be there, but I don’t want to rehash THAT story either. I will be firmly rooting for the Tigers. I will put my personal feelings about Tommy Bowden aside and cheer for a solid victory. Even a skeptic like me can see…he ain’t going anywhere. This morning I went to change my son Drake. I almost put on his Clemson outfit, but I stopped. I wanted him to wear it tomorrow night for the big game. The Tigers are 0-2 when Drake wears the outfit. Maybe it’s him.
What we do on my day off
Since getting married and having kids I have been much better about taking a day off in every week. Like so many people(pastors too!) I used to be really bad about taking a Sabbath. Now, I look forward to Thursdays and the hilarity that ensues. Here you go:
First Impressions
We went to Mi Pueblo, a Mexican restaurant in Lexington on Mother’s Day. We chose to eat on the patio waited patiently for our server. Here’s what happened in the time it took him to actually take our order.
1. Karen took the girls to the bathroom.
2. Drake was in the high chair long enough that he got tired of it so I got him out and took him to the van to get some coloring books and toys.
3. I started sweating since my back was in the sun.
4. Karen and I both needed and received drink refills from our server.
When I got back to the table with Drake I asked Karen if our order had been taken. She said no, but the server came right then. There is usually a point when I put on the “5 minute clock.” If our order hasn’t been taken in that time then we leave. We have left a few restaurants over the years who’ve failed to get the job done. Now, I don’t start the clock when we’re first seated so I’m not being unreasonable. The food was great at Mi Pueblo’s. It was the best burrito I’ve ever eaten. It did not feel like the cookie cutter menu item that many Mexican restaurant’s serve. The kids all cleaned their plates. Then it took forever to get our bill. Dude, when 3 kids get restless, you gotta get moving. The kids had been great, but they had been asked to sit and be still an awfully long time due to our service delays. Bottom line: I don’t know if we’re gonna go back. They had one shot and they blew it. The one thing they have going for them is that they’re the closest Mexican restaurant to us.
Now, this whole episode made me think about the church. How many times have first time guests left disappointed with their experience? How many times have we blown our one shot? People’s souls are far more important than chips and salsa, but are we swinging for the fences every time we open the doors or just mailing it in every now and then? Now, contrast Sunday’s experience with Monday night. I went to pick up some pizza and breadsticks at Papa’s Pizza. I paid the bill and got in the van. Right before I pulled out of the parking lot, the cashier caught my attention. He told me he realized he didn’t give me the special price and owed me money. I followed him back in and he gave me back $4. I hadn’t caught the mistake, but this guy chased me down when he did. Their pizza is not the best every time, but it’s service like that which creates customer loyalty. I wonder if churches offered an “hour back guarantee” if people would come knowing that if they didn’t like the service then they could get their hour back. We’ve got to treat every week like it’s our only opportunity to make a first and lasting impression.
The Busy Life of a Wesleyan Pastor

I’m sorry for the delay in posting. It has been a crazy few weeks for this Wesleyan Pastor. Here is what I’ve been doing.
1. My dog bit me last Thursday. Not sure why. There was one bad puncture wound, but it has healed. I think he was sick, but he just kinda snapped on me. We can’t do anything with him until Monday and I feel that we need to give him up. He will be eligible for adoption because the animal control officer did not consider him vicious. However, I don’t feel like I can take that chance with small children in the house. Sadly, Zorro, who has been with us for almost 7 years will no longer be with our family. My prayer is that he brings as much joy and comfort to another family as he has to us. It is a relief that we don’t have to put him down, but still very difficult for Karen and I.
2. Had to move the rest of our stuff from the storage unit to our house.
3. Trying to get our Sunday night children’s ministry off the ground.
4. Working to get a group from our church to Set Apart 07…
5. While trying to finish my work for the activities at the convention.
6. Finishing up my sermon for Sunday morning. What good Wesleyan Pastor isn’t?
7. Held our grand re-opening for the youth center with over 25 people attending. It was a night of DDR, Tim Hawkins, Guitar hero, and a fridge full of soda.
8. Had our first Sunday pm youth meeting, FUEL, that didn’t involve painting and moving stuff.
9. Drake got shots.
10. Charis and Milena get shots tomorrow.
Whew.
Any other Wesleyan pastors who are this busy? Am I the only one who’s having trouble sleeping?
