How do you create a Tweetable Mission Statement?
What does that even mean? I’ve been working on some life planning for myself, my family, and my church. This past weekend I had the opportunity to share some thoughts on forming good habits with some ministerial students from Southern Wesleyan University. One of the habits was to create a life mission statement to help guide them towards good choices and habits.
As I was working on mine, I came across a post form Michael Hyatt on the subject of the 140 Character Mission Statement. His examples were from a business perspective, but I thought the same principles applied to a personal life mission statement. He makes the call to create something, “Simple, straight-forward, and easy to implement.” As an avid user of Twitter and Social Media I wanted to take the challenge of creating a Tweetable Mission Statement that was 140 characters or less.
About a year ago, I read Stand Out and took an online strengths assessment. You can see my results here. At the time I was in the midst of leading two churches through a merger so my results were encouraging and confirming. My top two strengths were Pioneer and Connector. A Pioneer is described as,”You paint the most incredible pictures of what is possible, inspiring us to pursue our best ideas.” As a Connector,”You are a catalyst. Your power lies in your craving to put two things together to make something bigger than it is now.” Wow. Needless to say, I was stoked upon reading that and even more determined to see the merger happen.
As I prepared to write my Tweetable Mission Statement I took those two core strengths into consideration. After several re-writes, here’s what I came up with:
I connect people to Christ’s love and mission by discovering and developing relationships, resources, talents, and spiritual gifts.
For me, it’s all about The Great Commandment and the Great Commission. That’s why I’m looking to connect with people online and offline and leverage those relationships and resources for big kingdom impact. It fits my role as a co-host of the Techology Show to perfection. We are trying to be pioneers of new technologies to connect, empower, and encourage church leaders.
This is not rocket science. To make a Tweetable Mission Statement you simply need to state what you intend to do(connect people to Christ’s love and mission) and how you intend to do it(by discovering and developing relationship, resources, talents, and spiritual gifts). Is it that simple? Yes. Has mine helped me be intentional with free time? Yes. Are you going to work on yours right now? Yes.
What do you think? Is having a Tweetable MIssion Statement a worthwhile goal? I’d love to hear what you come up with. Please leave yours in the comment section below or send it to me on Twitter by mentioning @heathmullikin. Would you also take a moment to share this post using the share buttons below? It takes mere seconds, but would mean the world to me? Thanks for reading.

I liked this so much I had to go and rewrite mine. Thanks, Heath!
I’ll “show my work” here… can you give me a grade, teacher?
