Last year, I ran in the Foothills 5k that supports the Foothills Pregnancy Care Center. Oakway United is a sponsor of the event and this year we are fielding a 12 person team. Last year my time was around 45 minutes and my goal is to break the 30 minute mark this year. I started training last year, but suffered an injury early on so I was pretty much running cold turkey. I’ve been training for the past 2 weeks using the couch to 5k program. There are lots of resources there and my favorite has been the Robert Ullrey’s podcast. There are 9 podcasts that follow the running program and Robert talks you through when to run and when to walk during training. He’s included some great techno music to make the time fly by. The program calls for 3 days of running per week. I’m also using the Nike Plus app to map, chart, and record my runs. There are 3 reasons I’m choosing to run:
1. I want to live a healthier lifestyle.
2. I don’t want our church to simply give money away, but I want us to engage and partner with local organizations.
3. I want to build camaraderie with the people on our team as we encourage one another through the training and race.
I believe all of this honors God, helps a worthy cause, and gets me to a healthier weight. I’ve run now 6 times and it hasn’t been easy, but it has been rewarding. Do you need to get off the couch?
