Last night around 10 pm, our doorbell rang. Living next to the church has brought several late night visitors so I didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully, it was a young man who stopped to tell us that our chimney was shooting out sparks. He stayed while I put the fire out in the wood stove and helped me wet down the roof around the chimney. He said he saw lots of smoke and fire coming out of the chimney and knew he had to stop.
I wonder how many people drove by last night and saw the same thing without stopping. We called the local Fire Department and they responded quickly. Within 10 minutes there were 20 volunteer fireman and 5 trucks at our house checking things out. What could have been a pretty scary situation for my kids was made much easier by all of their kindness and professionalism.
Shane didn’t have to stop. I’m sure glad he did. He probably saved our lives and the house. How do you repay someone for that? For me, I’ll be on the look out, and if I see a “fire” I’m going to stop and help. I’m not sure if Shane is a Christian or not, but I’m certain he showed me what “loving your neighbor as yourself” really means. He’s welcome to ring my doorbell anytime he needs anything.
The kindness of a stranger touched my heart! How precious is it when you hear His whisper!
